Resume Writing Tips
Resume Do's:
- Begin with a clear objective or summary statement.
- Start sentences with action verbs applicable to your accomplishments.
- Quantify your experience whenever possible, citing data that demonstrates your contributions.
- Limit your resume to no more than two pages when possible.
- Organize education and employment in reverse chronological order (most recent first).
- List accomplishments in addition to describing duties.
- Give attention to the attractiveness and clarity of the resume.
- Proofread it numerous times, then have someone else do the same.
Resume Don'ts:
- Sell yourself short, resumes take time, you should be making several revisions as you go.
- Provide irrelevant information such as travel history, previous pay rates, reasons for leaving jobs, or the phrase "References upon request."
- List references on your resume. Prepare a separate list to be offered at interview time if asked.
- Make it a biography of everything you have ever done.
- Use unusual font types, shading, graphics, underlines, italics, and adjusted spacing. This will prevent your resume from being easily accessed by different computer programs.
